Dust flew into the air as the slight rubber tread of the golf cart wheels gripped the dirt and rocks of the road leading to the water front. Brandon shifted his weight into the turn, the cart responded and he moved on the outside of the curve to get in front of Amanda. Amanda was only watching Brandon in the other cart failed to see the low hanging tree branches. After getting hit repeatedly in the face, she let off the accelerator. Brandon and Amanda pulled up to water front, Brandon climbed out of his cart gloating.
“Don’t flatter yourself 17” Amanda said getting out of the golf cart she was driving.
“Ok, I’m 18 years old actually.” Brandon said grabbing the large inflatable Rabbit on the rack on the back of his golf cart. “ok I’ll be 18 in September.”
“Yeah till then you are still 17 and a more mature in my driving.”
“It was your idea to race.” Brandon said, trying to lift the over-sized rabbit. Struggling to even lift a corner, “are you just going to stand there or…”
“Yeah I’m kinda enjoying watching you try to pick up it up.”
“seriously this thing is heavier than concrete,” Brandon said sitting down on the ground, “or really like a big rock. How can something rubber be so heavy?”

the soap face incident
Cleaning is never that fun, it can sometimes get a little better when you have rockin’ tunes so you can use the broom as a make-shift guitar and you can slide and moonwalk across the freshly mopped floor like a teen pop star. This was exactly what the staff at camp Owtaluk were doing the morning of what would soon to be referred to as ’the soap face incident’.
It was a few days into staff training, hazing at been done, no sleep had been had by any staff or forest animal since the beginning of staff training; needless to say, elements for a wonder disaster were in place. The necessity of having to teach a person who is technically an adult to clean bathrooms baffling. But that is what The Leadership had them do because most camp councilors it seems have not idea how to mop or clean a mirror; Windex what‘s that? After a ’brief’, forty five minute grueling teaching time including the does and don’ts of the pink spray, and a lesson on cleaning; the groups were sent to their respective bathrooms to clean. Kai was paired up with Samantha, who had starting coming to camp Owtaluk when she was eight years old and was now a twelve year veteran with experience from being a camper to now being a senior staff .
Kai grabbed the bucket of cleaning supplies making sure everything was in it. Being told him and Samantha where cleaning the boys block washrooms Kai started off Samantha following at a slight distance. Half way to the block Mark approached Kai.
“Dude you need to do me a solid, and let me clean with Samantha.” Mark had been paired up with Madison, which was alright in his opinion but with their background he wanted to be with Samantha.
“Ok, sure…” Kai walked on, confused by the interaction between him and Mark. He had always felt looked down on by Mark, especially since they had been sleeping in the same cabin and Mark made a show of who was top dog at camp. “Why do you want to be with Sam instead of Madison? Madison is suuper…”
“Cause Samantha this summer will finally say yes to me.” Mark smiled smugly with absolute confidence in his lady killing ability.
“How many years have you been trying?” Kai asked
“Since LIT..”
[Editor’s note: LIT, Leaders In Training, a camp program for teens who want to work at camp but are not mature enough to be an actual councilor. “…But this year is the year she will finally say yes.” Mark’s confidence was dripping off of every word.
“Good luck with that.” Kai turned to Madison, “Hey Mad-my-son, you’re cleaning with me in the boys side.”
“Oh yeh, can I!” Madison with a fake sense of excitement. “See ya Mark, talk to you later Sam.” Kai and Madison opened the door to boys bathroom with a set of keys they had gotten on the first day of staff training. The two of them started to work, Madison left for a few minutes to get her boom box from her cabin. Blasting NCA-, Not Camp Appropriate,-music, the two of them cleaned the boys’ washroom; which takes time when it takes a good ten minutes you must explain what the purpose of a urinal puck. Time passed, broom guitar solos were had, the bathroom was almost complete. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a cool jet of pink cleaning fluid hit Kai in the back.
“What is going on over there, young lady?” Kai said jokingly to Madison.
“This way you don’t have to put detergent into the load of laundry.” Madison said trying to make a good reason for spraying Kai with a product that was strictly for cleaning “out of control” toilets and “grossly bad” mold off the drain of showers. “I can draw a smiley face if you want.”
Ten minutes…
“So you had a fight with cleaning supplies?” Jason Kihn the grounds keeper asked after he found Madison trying to climb out of an air vent and Kai using a plastic garbage can lid as a shield.
“Yes.” Madison said quickly joined by Kai. The three of them stood silent for a few seconds.
“Ok, well have fun with those rashes.” Jason said, walking away.
“Rashes?” Kai called after Jason.
“Yeah the pink solution causes skin irritation.” Kai looked over at Madison his eyes wide, Madison simply shrugged. “Come on you’ll miss the show!”
“What show?” Kai said running to catch up with Jason.
“Well not really a show, I’m just going to go break up Mark and Samantha from their making out.”
“Making out?” Kai said turning to Madison, “He said she had never said yes to him.”
“Oh yeah she would never say yes to a real relationship,” Madison said, “Just flings. See they have an underlying relationship all summer but he also has a relationship with another staff, then the last week he finally confesses his love to the new girl so they go out with him after camp.”
“Oh, did that happen to one of your friends last year?” Kai asked.
“No, just me…” Madison signed, “We should start cleaning the mess we made while we where cleaning.” Madison walked back to the door of the boy’s washroom.
“You dated Mark?”
