Staff training was in full swing...
Editors note:
Training of summer staff is really only half as fun as it sounds, most of time is spent listening to the leaders talk about camp rules and what to not do. what to do if a kid throws up on your bed after eating a Costco sized bag of sour gummy worms while they are pretending to be asleep. [editor's note to editor: first off why does the kid have a Costco sized bag of sour gummy worms that filled half of their suitcase that had to be trucked in by two camels and a man you thought lived at the circus. either way he or she has eaten this whole bag in the time it took you to climb into your bed and tell the kid in the bunk above you to stop making popping sounds the first four times [trust me that is only the first 1/574.28 of the times they'll do it that week]. also you have to learn to not do anything that is fun, like who doesn't want to go down the slide into the lake blindfolded, head first, into shallow water, with no PFD, or swimming abilities; did i mention that the lifeguard is in the guard shed with his lady friend while this is going on?... but since that never happens at camp owtaluk we don't have to worry about this...got that? never happens*.
it seems that staff training is full of things that are to dangerous or to messy or to time consuming to set up or to way to much fun to have during normal camp [except maybe senior high camp...but we'll get to that]. You don't really see a lot of maturity at staff training, from the food fights to the mud bowl fights to the flipping canoes and splashing girls, there really isn't any space for maturity.
oh and of course the crushes start during staff training, the hopes of something will develop over the summer with that special someone [usually you either find out they don't even like you, or they have a boy/girl friend, or you break up a month after camp, or you just get married; it's really up in the air. as an ex-councilor myself i can definitely say i have been in each of these situations. that's actually how i met my wife...but you wouldn't want to hear about that would you.
...Kai had never felt more like a mess than he did at that moment. His bare chest and now ripped jeans were covered in a mix of food condiments, mud, and watermelon. His face and hair caked with pudding and dirt forming his hair into a tall fohawk out of his long shaggy hair. Kai walked back to his cabin knowing that even when he changed his clothes and took a shower in four hours he would be just as sweaty and covered in food as he was now.
Madison ran behind Kai throwing a buckets worth of water, from a broken ice-cream bucket from the game they had just played, on his back and head. Kai stood there the water mixing with the dirt running down his face. Some other guys walked past, "nice look man! fits you!" They laughed.
"Dude she keeps doing stuff like that, are you going to stand for it?" Brandon said walking up.
"i'm thinking we get back at her." Kai said wiping his face with his less dirty arm.
"you thinking pranks?"
"i like your style!"
"i like your moves!" Brandon said tossing an orange traffic cone to Kai. Kai caught it in an upward sweeping motion like a hockey goalie. "nice snag!"
"nice toss!"
"nice abs!" both boys looked at each other..."what!?"
*This is a common, not the slide stuff but the lifeguards are often in the guard shed, doing life guarding practice for mouth-to-mouth...since that's obviously what their doing...right.
A collection of half true short stories about camp councilors and their adventures, mis-adventure, and times that really "you just had to be there".

With a little bit of jello [Premere]
Madison give a quick knock on the solid wood door leading into one of the many dull mono-coloured buildings; a hand painted sign indicating it as the camp office. A freakishly tall and skinny man answered the door, his obviously dyed red hair hidden under a hat that had gone out of style after the revolutionary war. The man’s baggy jean cut-offs shorts left nothing in mystery showing his legs from mid-thigh, held at the top by a green shoe lace from his right hiking boot. Letting out a laugh, the man extended his long fingered hand. “Albert Helbert, I run things around here.” his nasally voice cracking on the final word.
“Madison Grey,” Madison raised a hand in greeting waiting for Albert to remember her from last year and the seven e-mails and two phone calls since then. But what Madison had forgotten and would soon re-learn, Albert was very forgetful and actually didn’t know it wasn’t 1997 anymore. Albert Helbert stood motionless for a few seconds before, looking in both directions then getting his head down onto Madison’s eye level; which is hard for someone who is over seven feet tall to do with a girl only 5‘ 7“ with out picking her up; something that he couldn't do even if he wanted to he had lost most of his muscle mass after he started driving places in his golf cart.
“I think you’re lost,” Albert said his eyes getting wide.
“This is still Camp Owtaluk right?” Madison said knowing that nothing had changed here since the mid 90’s when Albert’s wife had died. it was not actually a very sad story, she had died while hiding for a night game and wasn't found until the final week of the summer under an old sail boat wearing a ski mask and full cam0flause with plastic plants stuck on with a hot glue gun. The most tragic part of the whole story is that she had hidden in the same hidding place for fourteen summers straight and no one had ever found her, camo or not. Camp legend goes that she actually never moved from that spot and ate and slept hiding so even if you found her when the game was over you still got the points.
“I think you’re looking for South Camp Owtaluk.”
“There’s a South Camp Owtaluk?” Madison asked in surprise.
“Not unless you started it.” Albert’s one eye squinted as he turned his head a little to the left. he stood there squinting. “Well did ya!” He appeared to be frowning but it was hard to know with a 73 year old man, everything starts to sag and it’s harder to figure out emotions.
“No.” Madison almost wanted to laugh but didn’t know if she should. “Diamond,” All the staff had nicknames that they received, it was a fun way to distinguish themselves from the campers and a great way to get to know each other, Albert Halbert’s was Diamond and Madison’s was Lucky. [Her name came from a long adventure the previous summer when she had fallen off of a roof during a wide game and got a cast. She had always loved to live on the edge and even with the cast she still playing sports and climbed on top of every roof]. “You told me that staff training was starting today, you called me. I’m going to be a councilor here like I was last year.”
“Well why didn’t you tell me!” Albert Rushed forward and hugged Madison bringing her close to his chest. Madison could feel all of Albert’s ribs through his shirt, and she felt extremely uncomfortable. “I didn’t know, you’re eleven minutes early. Here come inside and sign the guest book.” Madison moved into the room, as she did her his foot bumped into an empty jello cup laying on the floor. Picking it up Madison went to place it in the garbage can that was over flowing, as well as surrounded, by jello cups. As Madison looked around the room she noticed that Albert had not redone the office since he had first built the place in 1973. The smell of decaying animals and face paint filled the air mixed with dust, cedar wall coverings and ceiling, and assorted half eaten jello cups on almost every surface including his fax machine which already had a read jello smear across the key pad. Pulling a book covered in construction paper and duct tape, Albert placed it on the desk spilling a banana flavored jello all over the desk. Not one to waste, Albert quickly swept the transparent gelatin snack into his hand then throwing back his head swallowed it whole. After a swallow that could be followed as it descended, Albert grabbed a parrot head pen and handed it to Madison. As Albert licked his fingers Madison opened the book to see only Albert’s name through the whole book. “Am really a visitor, I’m going to be staff.”
“Are you?” Albert said surprised. “Well than we better get you an application.”
“I already sent it in.” Madison said.
“Well than I better find it.” Albert ran over to a small laundry basket behind a slot in the door. Starting to rummage through the letters, suddenly he stopped looking up at Madison. “Sorry can’t find it, better luck next year, there’s the door.” giving Madison a slight shove Albert closed the door and locked it.
Looking at the door for a few seconds Madison walked back towards her dad’s SUV. She would just come back in a few minutes when ’Diamond’ was a little more into the swing of camp again. Reaching her dad’s SUV Madison sat down on the back bumper and ran her fingers through her hair. Looking up she saw a little Honda civic and black pick-up truck pulling up the gravel road. Madison stood up from the bumper, surprise covered her face and slipped into every word. “No way…”

Arrival Day: Part 4: "It's a father/daughter thing"
“Another order of Cam’s special fries!” Madison called into the kitchen as she put her order slip onto the counter. “Table 14” Madison had been working at Cam’s burger and play barn since she had entered eight grade. After learning the ultimate Cam burger caused acne she had looked for another job. But getting a promotion to head waiters and a fat raise of two dollars she kept the job. Today was her last shift at Cam’s she was going to camp for the summer then moving to college and moving up in the restaurant business and got a job as a waitress at ’The Flaming Cutting Board’ a very prestiges steak house.
“Well I’m taking off Ben.” Madison said to the overweight cook. “It’s been good working with you.” Ben walked over his eyes whelming up with tears. Wiping his hands on his apron he opened his arms. Madison gave him a hug making sure not to touch the grease on his apron with her Cam’s cowgirl costume. “I’ll miss you guys.” Grabbing her backpack and checking her phone for messages, she walked out of the backdoor. The air was surprisingly cold for June making Madison walk briskly to her car. It wasn’t actually her car, but her dad’s. When she had turned eighteen her dad had given her the keys as long as she does not mention it at camp. Agreeing she took the keys to the Dark Red Audi A4 with no less than a thousand “I promises” and a few ‘I won’t dad“. The drive home was one of the funnest roads in the Abbotsford area, containing mostly country driving with almost forty sweeping turns and straight-aways with only the corn to catch you.
The next morning…
Madison connected her ipod to the stereo in her dad’s Land Rover, he opened the door and sat down. Starting the car he turned to her.
“Got everything?” Her dad asked.
“Yeah unless you’re going to tell me I need to bring the kitchen sink.” Madison said. Laughter filled the car, but only from him; she really didn’t find it funny anymore. She had been hearing the same joke since she had been three, so it had really lost it’s humor. As the buildings of Abbotsford and Chilliwack faded to fields and billboards, Madison set in for the long drive up camp Owtaluk. This was her second summer as staff and fourth summer in general at camp Owtaluk.
Stopping at a gas station Madison got out of the SUV her legs asleep making it hard to walk across the smooth pavement to the Quick-N-Shop mini mart across the parking lot. Reaching the door a man opened it for her. He was tall with a slight tan that came from playing rugby and working as a landscaper. “Thanks.” Madison said rushing through the door.
“Hey no problem.” He said raising his glass bottle of ice tea. Letting the door close behind himself and walked to his little black truck. Going to the cooler Madison grabbed a bottle of orange pop and walked to the front counter.
“Hey I like your shirt.” The lady behind the counter said. “The Robo-friends were always my favorite.”
“This a Transformers shirt actually.” Madison said placing the money on the counter.

Arival day: Part 3: The drive
Brandon grabbed the jug of milk and took a quick chug. Grabbing a yogurt cup and a box of cereal from on top of the fridge Brandon walked to the door and yelled, "See you in September mom!"
"You aren't going anywhere yet." His mom said walking in from the computer room. "Do you have everything?"
"Yes mom" Brandon said aggravated "I got everything."
"Soap, tooth brush and tooth paste, shoes, socks, laundry soap, towel, bathing suit, vitamins, extra money, ID, glasses, sunglasses, ipod, PFD, wetsuit, dress clothes, sunscreen, sun hat, rash cream."
"Mom you know i got rid of that rash when i was eleven, I'm almost twenty."
"Fine don't blame me when you're lying in bed in pain." She said as if she didn't care, "Do you have a notebook, pens, markers, waterwings, coat, rain shell, facepaint, deodorant, your lifeguard shirt, your cell phone, a charger, a camera, extra film, a tent, a water proof sleeve for a cast?"
"What? I don't even have a cast!"
"You might in the future. Sleeping bag, pillow."
"OH NO!!!" Brandon quickly ran to his room and grabbed his pillow and then ran down stairs and got a black sleeping bag his dad had used when he had climbed mount Blackcomb. "Ok i'm ready."
"Brandon you know that sleeping bag is for twenty below zero weather right?"
"Fine i'll get a new one." walking down to the basement he throwing the black sleeping bag on the floor and grabbed a light blue sleeping bag. "Ok i'm going now." Brandon said reaching the top of the stairs.
"Ok drive safely."
"Mom when have i ever not been a good driver?"
"Well you did get almost get into an accident the other day."
"Mom i was at a stop-light and the accident happened in the intersection. It didn't even happen to me."
"Still drive safe." His mom gave him a quick hug then shoved him towards the door.
"Mom are you crying?" Brandon walked to his car, holding his yogurt, cereal, and sleeping bag. quickly turning around to the door, Brandon grabbed his sleeping bag.
"Have a good time." She stepped outside onto the drive way. Tossing his stuff into the passenger seat, Brandon started the car. "See you at staff break." pulling the car back Brandon waved a goodbye as he drove away the raft catching the wind but staying on the top.
After four hours of driving, two bathroom breaks, three cans of Coke, an energy drink, and a gas station hotdog, Brandon began the drive around blind man's lake. Suddenly in front of him appeared a black pick up truck. After four minutes of driving only 20km/hr faster than the speed limit, Brandon gunned his little four cylinder Honda to pass the pick up. As he passed the pick up he glared at the driver, "What an idiot" Brandon said as he drove on along the lake side then took the turn off up the hill leading to camp Owtaluk. Looking in his review mirror he saw the black pick up also turning up the road. The only two things up the hill were a ranch and camp Owtaluk. Hoping the truck would turn the other direction, Brandon turned onto the gravel road with a large hand painted sign: Camp Owtaluk this way --->
But the truck didn't turn the other direction, it kept following Brandon all the way down the road. "Well hopefully he's cool."
Parking his car, Brandon got out and slipped on his lifeguard tee-shirt. Sitting on his bumper he watched as the black truck pulled up, and the tall driver got out and grabbed a single duffel bag and walked to the camp office.

Arrival Day: Part 2:Packing
Brandon walked into his room, his bare muscular shoulders and back flexing as he placed the large cardboard box onto the floor. The box wasn't really necessary, especially since all the contents was going to be emptied into three duffel bags and suitcases. But Brandon had just needed a way to carry all the random assortments of things while he walked around his house. Some of the items like an old chewed up tennis ball, and a butterfly costume that he had worn when he was eleven for Halloween. Standing up he took his ipod out of his pocket and changed the song. Taking one ear phone out and ducking his head back through the door he saw his mom.
"Mom have you seen my boat?" Brandon asked, "I've been looking all day, i looked everywhere. i can't find it."
"Have you looked in the shed out back?" His mother said sitting in the livingroom reading a magazine.
"Not yet!" Brandon called, "But good idea!"
Unlocking the door with the key hidden under the mat, Brandon entered the shed. Immediately seeing the orange inflatable life raft he had found at an auction, he lifted it down from it's resting place. In this act he also brought down the Christmas decorations breaking several hand painted glass spheres. Brushing the glass under the work bench with his foot, Brandon threw the raft over his shoulder and walked out of the shed. Carrying the three man raft to his little 1993 Honda Civic, Brandon half placed half threw the raft on top. Taking some rope and his little sisters skipping rope he attached the raft to the top; a tying job that the boy scouts would have either given him a badge for making up a new technique or just kicked him out for good.

Arrival day: Part 1: Genesis
Kai dropped his heavy military bag on the gravel of the road that ran above the grounds of camp Owtaluk. the camp looked as if it hadn't been updated, painted, washed, or even lived in for almost ten years. Some of the paint on the cabins had peeled off and all the shingled roofs had signs of moss. closing the tail-gate of his black pick up truck, Kai walked towards the building that he assumed to be the camp office. He half guessed because it was the first building he saw on the gravel road, and he seen a small wooden sign that looked like it had been painted by a seven year old who couldn't decide what color to use, and then had a seisure and spilled random bits of paint on it.
Knocking on bright red door, kai stood outside looking at a huge box beside the door marked 'archery'. the box did not contain anything pertaining to archery, it mostly held old clothes, and a few oily car parts.Kai turned back towards the door as a man whipped it open, his seven foot build ducking under the doorway. the man was very tall and ridiculously skinny, his obviously dyed red hair hung out from underneath his fishing hat. the man's top shirt buttons were open revealing four grey chest hairs. the shirt would have been fine looking shirt if not for the 317 stains that covered the hawaiin pattern. he wore faded cutoffs that were being held up by a shoe string from his hiking boot. his hairy legs were exposed showing the several scars he had gotten over the course of his seventy three years of life. he wore mixed matching socks and hiking boots.
"I"m Kai Matthews." the man's eyes widened, and he reached for the door.
"Sorry whatever your selling i'm not buying!" and with that, he slammed the door. Kai stood there not sure what to do, did he knock again, did he just go look around camp. After several minutes, Kai knocked a second time on the door. the man opened the door again, this time wearing only one boot and a lime green shirt that said Camp Owtaluk:adventure island in pirate looking font with a picture of a island probably found in a children's book from the 1930s.
"Hi, i got a call from you." Kai stood waiting for his speech to get cut off, "i'm up here as a cabin leader. My name is Kai Matthews."
"Kai!!! Welcome to camp Owtaluk!" He yelled, "I'm Albert Halbert, I'm the camp director, and your new friend." Kai tried not to laugh and just shook his hand. "You're going to love it here! follow me i'll show you the camp!" Albert lead Kai down onto the grounds of the camp, "There we have the dining hall, there's the fire pit, the general store, staff room, and utilities and craft shed is down that road. And here are all the cabins." Matt looked at the ten cabins surrounding a central washroom. "There we got the block washrooms, and here's your cabin: Thunder." Albert pointed to a small wooden building that had been a dark blue color when it was new but had faded to more of a lighter blue, with sections were the paint had peeled back revealing a coat of ugly green paint. "Well have fun!" Albert walked away, leaving Kai standing in front of his new home. Placing his duffel bag on the porch, and opened the door Kai was hit by a draft of stagnate air. Turning around Kai saw a girl walking up, her wavy dark brown hair falling over the shoulders of her blue transformers tee. finally getting the courage to talk to her, Kai walked up to talk to her. As he did she tripped on a root, her two duffel bags flying into the air.
"You alright!" Kai said running to help her up.
"Yeah all be fine." Her icy blue eyes catching his.
"Hey I'm Kai!" Kai said picking up one of her duffel bags.
"Hey, I'm Madison."
