Staring Death In the Face

Kai walked into the boathouse carrying an armful of dry lifejackets. As he entered the boathouse he saw Dannaya removing her wet lifejacket, she had been part of the water safety presentation. In the course of the presentation Dannaya had accidentally tipped a canoe and fallen in the water wearing jeans and a hoodie.
“Here need some help?” Kai said rushing over to pull the child size lifejacket off the shoulders of Dannaya. Getting the jacket unstuck from her shoulders, Kai placed the wet lifejacket on the drying racks that lined the sides of the boathouse.
“Thanks, Kai.” Dannaya said as she took off her hoodie and wrapped a towel around herself.
“It’s kinda to bad though,” Kai joked, “you looked so good in that little lifejacket.” Dannaya stood up with a smile from drying her jeans with the towel. She took a stepped forward so that she was standing directly in front of him.
“Thank you very much.” Dannaya said taking Kai’s hands, “But you happen to look good all the time.” Smiling at Kai a final time, Dannaya let go of Kai’s hands and flipped her blonde wet hair over her shoulder and left the boathouse. Kai stood stunned, did she like him back, where they going to be one of those camp couples he had heard so much about? Looking over he saw Dannaya’s purple hoodie laying on the lifejacket racks, he picked it up and gave it a quick wring to get out some of the water. Starting for the door Kai was stopped by Kevin, his hulking figure blocked the door. He stood in the doorway his military toned muscles stretching the sleeveless lifeguard shirt he wore. Taking a step forward he saw Dannaya’s purple hoodie in Kai’s hands.
“Hey buddy whatcha doing with my sister’s sweater?” Kevin’s voice seemed to be joking yet sincere with no real anger or scolding, as if he wanted to know why he was carrying around her wet hoodie.
“Oh I was just putting away some lifejackets and she was drying off,” Kai said not quite sure how to explain it. “And she took it off and forgot it.” suddenly Kevin’s face turned into a stone cold slab, his jaw locking into a chiseled half octagon.
“So you saw my sister changing?” Kevin moved forward flexing his back. This confrontation would have been much for intimidating if Kai had not been basically the same height as Kevin. Even with the similar heights, Kevin still had an extra fifty pounds of muscle behind himself. “If I see you around my sister again, I will rip you apart and throw you into the lake still alive.” Kevin’s eyes were getting progressively more intense with every word.
“Dude, it’s not like that.” Kai said dropping his eyes, and wiping his mouth of moisture preparing for a punch to the face, “We just happened to be in the boathouse together.”
“Well make sure it doesn’t ’happen’ again.” Kevin said gritting his teeth, “You’re looking into the eyes of a merchant of death buddy.” Kevin turned two fingers on his eyes then turning them towards Kai. “You’ll be watched.” Kevin exited the boathouse and continued to pick up a land born canoe and began walking to the water.
“You know that doesn’t float right” Brandon said, carrying three Kayak oars. Kevin stayed silent just turned towards Brandon and with a glare dropped the canoe and trudged off towards the dining hall. Shrugging it off, Brandon turned towards the boathouse to see a shaken up Kai. “You alright dude?”
“Yeah I just stared into the eyes of death, and survived.”
